There is no pretense during the miraculous process of childbirth. Capturing the essence of this life-changing event, birth photography serves as the ultimate form of authentic storytelling, allowing for the immortalization of countless precious moments.
It’s in the intricate details, in the raw and genuine emotions that unfold before the lens – the pained expressions, the laughter shared between contractions, the flood of heartfelt text messages received. It extends to the unwavering presence of the supporting partner, their soothing shoulder massages, the interlocking of hands, and leaning on one another for unwavering support.
Thanks to the activism of women like Katie Vigos from the Empowered Birth Project, Facebook and Instagram made the decision to stop removing posts that featured birth and breastfeeding mothers last year. In the past, these social media giants considered birth photos too explicit and in violation of their policies against nudity. However, Vigos, along with over 23,000 individuals who signed her Change.org petition, believed that by censoring birth, these platforms were perpetuating shame, stigma, and social taboo surrounding the topic.
“Birth should be acknowledged and supported on every platform, without any exceptions,” Vigos expressed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “The petition represents a much broader mission of empowering ourselves as women, which includes reclaiming autonomy over our bodies, making informed decisions about childbirth, receiving adequate support, addressing censorship of our bodies, and eliminating the stigma around menstruation.”
In today’s era, if we take a quick look at hashtags such as #birthisbeautiful or #birthwithoutfear, we will find countless mesmerizing pictures of newborn babies coming into this world.
